What is Nissan ProPILOT Assist?

A Review of Nissan's ProPILOT Assist

Independent driving means the future. One of the companies transporting us closer to self-sufficient driving is Nissan, through their state-of-the-art semi-free driving technology: ProPILOT Assist.

Available on the Rogue, Rogue Sport, Leaf, and Altima models.

The Nissan ProPILOT Assist has been designed to assist drivers during long drives. The technology helps the driver drive safer by actively controlling the speed of the car and the distance maintained from vehicles around it.

The ProPILOT Assist uses a specialized steering assist technology and the Intelligent Cruise Control feature to track the car’s movement as it drives. It employs a rear-view camera and sensors to identify when a vehicle is extremely close. The sensors also track lane markers to assist with lane-keeping.

This technology doesn’t change the speed and direction of the car. Its job is to provide the driver with timely inputs to prevent accidents during long drives. Once the feature is enabled, the driver needs to set the speed and distance (between vehicles) limits. It will operate this instruction to track whether you're in constant adherence to these limits.

When you are extremely near another vehicle, exceed the speed limit, or get out of your lane, ProPILOT Assist will provide visible alerts in the form of light-indicators. If there is too much traffic, the technology initiates a stop-and-go feature by tracking how close vehicles around the car are.

Another advantage is it can recognize when the driver's hands are off the steering. You will identify an indicator immediately, requesting the driver to place his/her hands back on the wheel. If the driver doesn’t grip the steering wheel, ProPILOT Assist will gently start pulsating the brakes. After a few more seconds, the system automatically starts slowing down the car and causes the vehicle to a halt safely.
